No vote

Damn, I've just found out that I'm not on the electoral register. I called up Tower Hamlets to find out why we haven't been sent a polling card and they suggested that I should check with the last place I was registered. I called Oxford City Council only to find out that they wipe all students off the register, annually. Well, that's it then. I suppose. Too late to register for this election, and I don't exist where I last existed. I know I should have looked into it earlier, but I am frustrated that Tower Hamlets borough council don't share info between departments. You would have thought that paying council tax and all the details they get from you when you do that actually counted for something. Not currently (although they are considering it).

The deadline to register was also 6 weeks ago incidentally, i.e. before they called the General Election. That doesn't seem entirely fair, to me, either.

Oh I sympathise but I think you might have been expecting a little too much from Britain's Middle Managers to actually do something useful for the taxpayer without being forced to.

I'm still hoping that I can do a postal vote as I'll be in America by the election. I think I like the idea of being far away when it all happens, especially if the bloody Tories get back in again.

Do you know who you would have voted for if you had been allowed?

Yeah, I would have voted for the Tories. They won't get back in again, but the Labour party need to lose seats and get a shot across the boughs. This country is being ruined.

Of course, what will actually happen in Bethnal Green and Bow constituency where I live is that George "the embodiment of evil" Galloway will get in. Which'll be rubbish.

But then, my vote wouldn't have counted for much in the wash.
Here's a good article on the situation

Camden Council were far more competent. If they hadn't sent me a form _before_ the general election asking me to fill in who lived at my address and whether the existing details they had were correct then I never would have got a vote. So, yes, Tower Hamlets are silly silly people. But then I guess you knew that.

I'm voting Lib Dem, just so you know, since I have no interest in any of the issues the Tories have been campaigning on since the election was announced.

ttfn!

Giles - yeah, I knew that it was from a leftist publication, but that link to the history of it was really interesting. Thanks for sending it.

Neil - on the upside, my mum sent off the postal vote request for me and then the people at the election office in Cardiff forwarded me a letter giving me the option of registering for a postal vote. The incompetence was astounding because the deadline for return of the forms was this Tuesday, and the form didn't arrive in London until Monday, therefore not giving me time to return it once I'd returned from work. I called them to complain on Tuesday and they let me fax the form to them, but I'm still waiting on the actual vote arriving, and I have a feeling that incompetence might be my undoing again.

Wow - it's been a nerve-wracking election for me!
